Kucinich Explains Latest Developments in Libor Scandal

Last week, Congressman Kucinich released another video explaining what the London Interbank Offered Rate (Libor) is, how it affects world markets, and why the Libor scandal is important. The text of the Congressman’s video follows. “As millions of Americans struggle to make interest payments on car loans, student loans, and mortgages we are learning that a bedrock of the rates we pay on those loans was manipulated for private profit — probably for years. “Last week I explained that something called Libor, or the London Interbank Offered Rate, affects almost everyone because the interest rates we pay on just about everything are tied to Libor. Manipulating that rate for profit could send tremors throughout the financial system. “Here is what we know so far; Barclays, a British multinational bank manipulated Libor. I have seen transcripts of phone calls and emails describing the manipulation. We are also seeing evidence that suggests that other financial institutions were involved. “The Federal Reserve is a private entity that is tasked, in part, with protecting the monetary system. They are one of the agencies that are supposed to protect consumers from ‘too big to fail’ and ‘systemic risk.’ On Friday, we learned that in 2008, the New York Federal Reserve knew that Libor manipulation was happening. Instead of cracking down on the banks, the New York Fed simply suggested some changes to the way the Libor is set. This is an enormous problem, because Libor is essential to

Watermelon (Citrullus lanatus (Thunb.), family Cucurbitaceae) can be both the fruit and the plant of a vine-like (scrambler and trailer) plant originally from southern Africa, and is one of the most common types of melon. This flowering plant produces a special type of fruit known by botanists as a pepo, a berry which has a thick rind (exocarp) and fleshy center (mesocarp and endocarp); pepos are derived from an inferior ovary, and are characteristic of the Cucurbitaceae. The watermelon fruit, loosely considered a type of melon (although not in the genus Cucumis), has a smooth exterior rind (green, yellow and sometimes white) and a juicy, sweet interior flesh (usually pink, but sometimes orange, yellow, red and sometimes green if not ripe). It is also commonly used to make a variety of salads, most notably fruit salad.

HISTORY

Watermelon is thought to have originated in southern Africa, where it is found growing wild, because it reaches maximum genetic diversity there, resulting in sweet, bland and bitter forms. Alphonse de Candolle, in 1882,[2] already considered the evidence sufficient to prove that watermelon was indigenous to tropical Africa.[3] Though Citrullus colocynthis is often considered to be a wild ancestor of watermelon and is now found native in north and west Africa, Fenny Dane and Jiarong Liu[4] suggest on the basis of chloroplast DNA investigations that the cultivated and wild watermelon appear to have diverged independently from a common ancestor, possibly C. ecirrhosus from Namibia.
It is not known when the plant was first cultivated, but Zohary and Hopf note evidence of its cultivation in the Nile Valley from at least as early as the second millennium BC. Although watermelon is not depicted in any Egyptian hieroglyphic text nor does any ancient writer mention it, finds of the characteristically large seed are reported in Twelfth dynasty sites; numerous watermelon seeds were recovered from the tomb of Pharaoh Tutankhamun.[5]
By the 10th century AD, watermelons were being cultivated in China, which is today the world’s single largest watermelon producer. By the 13th century, Moorish invaders had introduced the fruit to Europe; according to John Mariani’s The Dictionary of American Food and Drink, "watermelon" made its first appearance in an English dictionary in 1615.
Museums Online South Africa list watermelons as having been introduced to Native Americans in the 16th century. Early French explorers found Native Americans cultivating the fruit in the Mississippi Valley. Many sources list the watermelon as being introduced in Massachusetts as early as 1629. Southern food historian John Egerton has said he believes African slaves helped introduce the watermelon to the United States. Texas Agricultural Extension horticulturalist Jerry Parsons lists African slaves and European colonists as having distributed watermelons to many areas of the world. Parsons also mentions the crop being farmed by Native Americans in Florida (by 1664) and the Colorado River area (by 1799). Other early watermelon sightings include the Midwestern states (1673), Connecticut (1747) and the Illiana region (1822).

Charles Fredric Andrus, a horticulturist at the USDA Vegetable Breeding Laboratory in Charleston, South Carolina, set out to produce a disease-resistant and wilt-resistant watermelon. The result was "that gray melon from Charleston." Its oblong shape and hard rind made it easy to stack and ship. Its adaptability meant it could be grown over a wide geographical area. It produced high yields and was resistant to the most serious watermelon diseases: anthracnose and fusarium wilt.
Today, farmers in approximately 44 states in the U.S. grow watermelon commercially, and almost all these varieties have some Charleston Gray in their lineage. Georgia, Florida, Texas, California and Arizona are the USA’s largest watermelon producers.
This now-common watermelon is often large enough that groceries often sell half or quarter melons. There are also some smaller, spherical varieties of watermelon, both red- and yellow-fleshed, sometimes called "icebox melons."

Square watermelon from Japan
In Japan, farmers of the Zentsuji region found a way to grow cubic watermelons, by growing the fruits in glass boxes and letting them naturally assume the shape of the receptacle.[6] The square shape is designed to make the melons easier to stack and store, but the square watermelons are often more than double the price of normal ones. Pyramid shaped watermelons have also been developed and any polyhedral shape may potentially also be used.

Culture

For commercial plantings, one beehive per acre (4,000 m² per hive) is the minimum recommendation by the US Department of Agriculture for pollination of conventional, seeded varieties. Because seedless hybrids have sterile pollen, pollinizer rows of varieties with viable pollen must also be planted. Since the supply of viable pollen is reduced and pollination is much more critical in producing the seedless variety, the recommended number of hives per acre, or pollinator density, increases to three hives per acre (1,300 m² per hive).

A watermelon contains about 6% sugar and 92% water by weight.[7] As with many other fruits, it is a source of vitamin C.
The amino acid citrulline was first extracted from watermelon and analysed.[8] Watermelons contain a significant amount of citrulline and after consumption of several kg, an elevated concentration is measured in the blood plasma; this could be mistaken for citrullinaemia or other urea cycle disorders.[9]
Watermelon rinds, usually a light green or white color, are also edible and contains many hidden nutrients that most people avoid eating due to its unappealing flavor. They are sometimes used as a vegetable.[10] In China, they are stir-fried, stewed or more often pickled. When stir-fried, the de-skinned and de-fruited rind is cooked with olive oil, garlic, chili peppers, scallions, sugar and rum. Pickled watermelon rind is also commonly consumed in the Southern US.[11] Watermelon juice can also be made into wine.[12]
Watermelon is also mildly diuretic[13] and contains large amounts of beta carotene.[14] Watermelon with red flesh is a significant source of lycopene.

VARIETIES

There are more than 1200[15] varieties of watermelon ranging in size from less than a pound, to more than two hundred pounds, with flesh that is red, orange, yellow or white.[16] Several notable varieties are included here.
Carolina Cross: This variety of watermelon produced the current world record watermelon weighing 262 pounds (119 kg). It has green skin, red flesh and commonly produces fruit between 65 and 150 pounds (29 and 68 kg). It takes about 90 days from planting to harvest.[17]
Yellow Crimson Watermelon: variety of watermelon that has a yellow colored flesh. This particular type of watermelon has been described as "sweeter" and more "honey" flavored than the more popular red flesh watermelon.[18]
Orangeglo: This variety has a very sweet orange pulp, and is a large oblong fruit weighing 9–14 kg (20–30 pounds). It has a light green rind with jagged dark green stripes. It takes about 90–100 days from planting to harvest.[19]
The Moon and Stars variety of watermelon has been around since 1926.[20] The rind is purple/black and has many small yellow circles (stars) and one or two large yellow circles (moon). The melon weighs 9–23 kg (20–50 pounds).[21] The flesh is pink or red and has brown seeds. The foliage is also spotted. The time from planting to harvest is about 90 days.[22]
Cream of Saskatchewan: This variety consists of small round fruits, around 25 cm (10 inches) in diameter. It has a quite thin, light green with dark green striped rind, with sweet white flesh and black seeds. It can grow well in cool climates. It was originally brought to Saskatchewan, Canada by Russian immigrants. These melons take 80–85 days from planting to harvest.[23]
Melitopolski: This variety has small round fruits roughly 28–30 cm (11–12 inches) in diameter. It is an early ripening variety that originated from the Volga River region of Russia, an area known for cultivation of watermelons. The Melitopolski watermelons are seen piled high by vendors in Moscow in summer. This variety takes around 95 days from planting to harvest.[24]
Densuke Watermelon: This variety has round fruit up to 25 lb (11 kg). The rind is black with no stripes or spots. It is only grown on the island of Hokkaido, Japan, where up to 10 000 watermelons are produced every year. In June 2008, one of the first harvested watermelons was sold at an auction for 650 000 yen (6300 USD), making the most expensive watermelon ever sold. The average selling price is generally around 25 000 yen (250 USD)

Cultural uses and references

Watermelon and other fruit in Boris Kustodiev’s Merchant’s Wife.
In Vietnamese culture, watermelon seeds are consumed during the Vietnamese New Year’s holiday, Tết, as a snack.[26]
Stereotypical caricatures may depict African Americans as being inordinately fond of watermelon.[27]
The Oklahoma State Senate passed a bill on 17 April 2007 declaring watermelon as the official state vegetable, with some controversy surrounding whether a watermelon is a fruit.[28]
The citrulline which exists in watermelon (especially in the rind) is a known stimulator of nitric oxide. Nitric oxide is thought to relax and expand blood vessels, much like the erectile dysfunction drug Viagra, and may even increase libido.[29]
Fans of the Saskatchewan Roughriders of the CFL started a tradition of hollowing out a watermelon and wearing it as a makeshift football helmet (the color of the Roughriders is green). During the 2009 Grey Cup in Calgary (between the Montreal Alouettes and the Roughriders), thousands of watermelons had to be imported to Calgary supermarkets to prevent a shortage being caused by Rider fans.
The town of Chinchilla in Queensland, Australia holds a biannual festival celebrating all things melon.
The Ten-lined June beetle is often affectionately referred to as a Watermelon Beetle, due to the green, striped pattern on its back.

Is an oil free future possible?
oil future

Is an oil free future possible? That was the question that brought together leading MEPs, businessmen and Nobel Prize winners on Tuesday 7 December for the STOA science lecture. The Parliament’s "Science and Technology Options Assessment" panel consider ways in which Europe could wean itself off oil and whether it would indeed be possible to have a future without it. Climate engineering, electric cars, particles of sulphur and methanol were all mentioned as ways of tackling climate change.

The keynote speakers were Shai Agassi, CEO of the company Better Place and two Nobel Prize laureates in chemistry: Dr Paul Crutzen from Max-Planck-Institute and Prof George Oláh from the University of Southern California. Participants discussed keynote speakers’ presentations in a panel discussion and a workshop. The lecture have been moderated by BBC journalist Shirin Wheeler.

Before the event, Vice-President responsible for STOA Silvana Koch-Mehrin (ALDE, DE), STOA Chairman Paul Rübig (EPP, AT), and STOA Vice-chairman Malcolm Harbour (ECR, UK), holded a press conference with invited guests. Press conference and the lecture will be web-streamed.

Throughout the day, a demonstration of electric and hybrid cars, with the possibility of test drives, took place in the Esplanade area in front of Parliament’s Altiero Spinelli building (entrance from Place du Luxembourg).

Ghost Town of Rhyolite, Nevada (17)
gold prices news

Rhyolite is a ghost town in Nye County, in the U.S. state of Nevada. It is located in the Bullfrog Hills, about 120 miles (190 km) northwest of Las Vegas, near the eastern edge of Death Valley. The town began in early 1905 as one of several mining camps that sprang up after a prospecting discovery in the surrounding hills. During an ensuing gold rush, thousands of gold-seekers, developers, miners, and service providers flocked to the Bullfrog Mining District. Many settled in Rhyolite, which lay in a sheltered desert basin near the region’s biggest producer, the Montgomery Shoshone Mine.

Industrialist Charles M. Schwab bought the Montgomery Shoshone Mine in 1906 and invested heavily in infrastructure including piped water, electric lines, and railroad transportation that served the town as well as the mine. By 1907, Rhyolite had electric lights, water mains, telephones, newspapers, a hospital, a school, an opera house, and a stock exchange. Published estimates of the town’s peak population vary widely, but scholarly sources generally place it in a range between 3,500 and 5,000 in 1907–08.

Rhyolite declined almost as rapidly as it rose. After the richest ore was exhausted, production fell. The 1906 San Francisco earthquake and the financial panic of 1907 made it more difficult to raise development capital. In 1908, investors in the Montgomery Shoshone Mine, concerned that it was overvalued, ordered an independent study. When the study’s findings proved unfavorable, the company’s stock value crashed, further restricting funding. By the end of 1910, the mine was operating at a loss, and it closed in 1911. By this time, many out-of-work miners had moved elsewhere, and Rhyolite’s population dropped well below 1,000. By 1920, it was close to zero.

After 1920, Rhyolite and its ruins became a tourist attraction and a setting for motion pictures. Most of its buildings crumbled, were scavenged for building materials, or were moved to nearby Beatty or other towns, although the railway depot and a house made chiefly of empty bottles were repaired and preserved. From 1988 to 1998, three companies operated a profitable open-pit mine at the base of Ladd Mountain, about 1 mile (1.6 km) south of Rhyolite. The Goldwell Open Air Museum lies on private property just south of the ghost town, which is on public property overseen by the Bureau of Land Management.

The town is named for rhyolite, an igneous rock composed of light-colored silicates, usually buff to pink and occasionally light gray. It belongs to the same rock class, felsic, as granite but is much less common.[2] The Amargosa River, which flows through Beatty, gets its name from the Spanish word for "bitter", amargo. In its course, the river takes up large amounts of salts, which give it a bitter taste.[3]

"Bullfrog" was the name Frank "Shorty" Harris and Ernest "Ed" Cross, the prospectors who started the Bullfrog gold rush, gave to their mine. As quoted by Robert D. McCracken in A History of Beatty, Nevada, Harris said during a 1930 interview for Westways magazine, "The rock was green, almost like turquoise, spotted with big chunks of yellow metal, and looked a lot like the back of a frog."[4] The Bullfrog Mining District, the Bullfrog Hills, the town of Bullfrog, and other geographical entities in the region took their name from the Bullfrog Mine.[5] "Bullfrog" became so popular that Giant Bullfrog, Bullfrog Merger, Bullfrog Apex, Bullfrog Annex, Bullfrog Gold Dollar, Bullfrog Mogul, and most of the district’s other 200 or so mining companies included "Bullfrog" in their names.[6]

"Beatty" is named after "Old Man" Montillus (Montillion) Murray Beatty, a Civil War veteran and miner who bought a ranch along the Amargosa River just north of what became the town of Beatty. In 1906, he sold the ranch to the Bullfrog Water, Power, and Light Company.[7] "Shoshone" in "Montgomery Shoshone Mine" refers to the Western Shoshone people indigenous to the region. In about 1875, the Shoshone had six camps along the Amargosa River near Beatty. The total population of these camps was 29, and because game was scarce, they subsisted largely on seeds, bulbs, and plants gathered throughout the region, including the Bullfrog Hills.[8]

The Bullfrog Hills are at the western edge of the southwestern Nevada volcanic field. Extensionally-faulted volcanic rocks, ranging in age from about 13.3 million years to about 7.6 million years, overlie the region’s Paleozoic sedimentary rocks.[9] The prevailing rocks, which contain the ore deposits, are a series of rhyolitic lava flows[10] that built to a combined thickness of about 8,000 feet (2,400 m) above the more ancient rock.[11] After the flows ceased, tectonic stresses fractured the area into many separate fault blocks.[9] Most of these blocks tilt to the east, and the horizontal banding of individual flows shows clearly on their western scarps.[12] Within the blocks, the ore deposits tend to occur in nearly vertical mineralized faults or fault zones in the rhyolite. Most of the lodes in the Bullfrog Hills are not simple veins but rather fissure zones with many stringers of vein material.[13]

Rhyolite is at the northern end of the Amargosa Desert in Nye County in the U.S. state of Nevada. Nestled in the Bullfrog Hills, about 120 miles (190 km) northwest of Las Vegas, it is about 60 miles (97 km) south of Goldfield, and 90 miles (140 km) south of Tonopah. Roughly 4 miles (6.4 km) to the east lie Beatty and the Amargosa River. To the west, roughly 5 miles (8.0 km) from Rhyolite, the Funeral and Grapevine Mountains of the Amargosa Range rise between the Amargosa Desert in Nevada and Death Valley in California. State Route 374, passing about 0.75 miles (1.21 km) south of Rhyolite, links Beatty to Death Valley via Daylight Pass. Rhyolite is about 25 miles (40 km) west of Yucca Mountain and the proposed Yucca Mountain nuclear waste repository, which is adjacent to the Nevada Test Site.[14][15][16]

Surrounded on three sides by ridges but open to the south, the ghost town is at 3,800 feet (1,200 m) above sea level.[1] The high points of the ridges are Ladd Mountain to the east, Sutherland Mountain to the west, and Busch Peak to the north.[17] Sawtooth Mountain, the highest point in the Bullfrog Hills, rises to 6,002 feet (1,829 m) above sea level about 3 miles (4.8 km) northwest of Rhyolite.[18] The hills form a barrier between the Amargosa Desert and Sarcobatus Flat to the north. Most of the primary mining communities in the Beatty–Rhyolite area during the gold-rush boom of 1904–08 were either in or on the edge of the Bullfrog Hills.[19] Of these and many smaller towns and camps in the Bullfrog district, only Beatty survived as a populated place.[20] Prior to its demise, the rival town of Bullfrog lay about 0.75 miles (1.21 km) southwest of Rhyolite, and the Montgomery Shoshone Mine was on the north side of Montgomery Mountain, about 1.5 miles (2.4 km) northeast of Rhyolite.[14]

Nevada’s main climatic features are bright sunshine, low annual precipitation, heavy snowfall in the higher mountains, clean, dry air, and large daily temperature ranges. Strong surface heating occurs by day and rapid cooling by night, and usually even the hottest days have cool nights. The average percentage of possible sunshine in southern Nevada is more than 80 percent. Sunshine and low humidity in this region account for an average evaporation, as measured in evaporation pans, of more than 100 inches (2,500 mm) of water a year.[21]

Beatty, about 500 feet (150 m) lower in elevation than Rhyolite, receives only about 6 inches (152 mm) of precipitation a year. July is the hottest month in Beatty, when the average high temperature is 97 °F (36 °C) and the average low is 61 °F (16 °C). December and January are the coolest months with an average high of 54 °F (12 °C) and an average low of 27 °F (−3 °C) in December and 28 °F (−2 °C) in January.[22] Rhyolite is high enough in the hills to have relatively cool summers, and it has relatively mild winters. However, it is far from sources of water.[17]

On August 9, 1904, Cross and Harris found gold on the south side of a southwestern Nevada hill later called Bullfrog Mountain.[23] Assays of ore samples from the site suggested values up to ,000 a ton,[24] or about ,000 a ton in 2009 dollars when adjusted for inflation.[25] Word of the discovery spread to Tonopah and beyond, and soon thousands of hopeful prospectors and speculators rushed to what became known as the Bullfrog Mining District.[26]

Within the district, gold rush settlements quickly arose near the mines, and Rhyolite became the largest.[27] It sprang up near the most promising discovery, the Montgomery Shoshone Mine, which in February 1905 produced ores assayed as high as ,000 a ton,[28] equivalent to 2,000 a ton in 2009.[25] Starting as a two-man camp in January 1905, Rhyolite became a town of 1,200 people in two weeks and reached a population of 2,500 by June 1905. By then it had 50 saloons, 35 gambling tables, cribs for prostitution, 19 lodging houses, 16 restaurants, half a dozen barbers, a public bath house, and a weekly newspaper, the Rhyolite Herald. Four daily stage coaches connected Goldfield, 60 miles (97 km) to the north, and Rhyolite. Rival auto lines ferried people between Rhyolite and Goldfield and the rail station in Las Vegas in Pope-Toledos, White Steamers, and other touring cars.[27]

Ernest Alexander "Bob" Montgomery, the original owner, and his partners sold the mine to industrialist Charles M. Schwab in February 1906.[29] Schwab expanded the operation on a grand scale, hiring workers, opening new tunnels and drifts, and building a huge mill to process the ore. He had water piped in, paid to have an electric line run 100 miles (160 km) from a hydroelectric plant at the foot of the Sierras to Rhyolite, and contracted with the Las Vegas and Tonopah Railroad to run a spur line to the mine.[30] Three railroads eventually served Rhyolite. The first was the Las Vegas and Tonopah Railroad (LVTR), which began running regular trains to the city on December 14, 1906.[31] Its depot, built in California-mission style, cost about 0,000,[32] equivalent to about ,110,000 in 2009.[25] About a half-year later, the Bullfrog Goldfield Railroad (BGR) began regular service from the north. By December 1907, the Tonopah and Tidewater Railroad (TTR) began service to Rhyolite on tracks leased from the BGR. The TTR was built to reach the borax-bearing colemanite beds in Death Valley as well as the gold fields.[31]

By 1907, about 4,000 people lived in Rhyolite, according to Richard E. Lingenfelter in Death Valley & the Amargosa: A Land of Illusion.[32] Russell R. Elliott cites an estimated population of 5,000 in 1907–08 in Nevada’s Twentieth-Century Mining Boom, noting that "accurate population figures during the boom are impossible to obtain".[33] Alan H. Patera in Rhyolite: The Boom Years states published estimates of the peak population have been "as high as 6,000 or 8,000, but the town itself never claimed more than 3,500 through its newspapers".[34] The newspapers estimated that 6,000 people lived in the Bullfrog mining district, which included the towns of Rhyolite, Bullfrog, Gold Center, and Beatty as well as camps at the major mines.[34]

Rhyolite in 1907 had concrete sidewalks, electric lights, water mains, telephone and telegraph lines, daily and weekly newspapers, a monthly magazine, police and fire departments, a hospital, school, opera house, and stock exchange, and two churches. Most prominent was the three-story John S. Cook and Co. Bank on Golden Street. Finished in 1908, it cost more than ,000,[32] equivalent to ,150,000 in 2009.[25] Much of the cost went for Italian marble stairs, imported stained-glass windows, and other luxuries. The building housed brokerage offices and the post office as well as the bank. Other large buildings included the train depot, the three-story Overbury Block, the two-story eight-room school, and the Bottle House. A miner named Tom T. Kelly built the Bottle House in February 1906 from 50,000 discarded beer and liquor bottles.[32] Another building housed the Rhyolite Mining Stock Exchange, which opened on March 25, 1907, with 125 members, including brokers from New York, Philadelphia, Los Angeles, and other large cities. The small, modestly-equipped storefront listed shares of 74 Bullfrog companies and a similar number of companies in nearby mining districts. Sixty thousand shares changed hands on the first day, and by the end of the second week the number had topped 750,000.[35]

Although the mine produced more than million (equivalent to ,900,000 in 2009)[25] in bullion in its first three years, its shares declined from a share (in historical dollars) to less than .[37] In February 1908, a committee of minority stockholders, suspecting that the mine was overvalued, hired a British mining engineer to conduct an inspection. The engineer’s report was unfavorable, and news of this caused a sudden further decline in share value from to 75 cents.[38] Schwab expressed disappointment when he learned that "the wonderful high-grade [ore] that had brought [the mine] fame was confined to only a few stringers and that what he had actually bought was a large low-grade mine."[37] Although the mine was still profitable, by 1909 no new ore was being discovered, and the value of the remaining ore steadily decreased. In 1910, the mine operated at a loss for most of the year, and on March 14, 1911, it was closed. By then, the stock, which had fallen to 10 cents a share, slid to 4 cents and was dropped from the exchanges.[39]

Rhyolite began to decline before the final closing of the mine. At roughly the same time that the Bullfrog mines were running out of high-grade ore, the 1906 San Francisco earthquake diverted capital to California, and the financial panic of 1907 restricted funding for mine development. As mines in the district reduced production or closed, unemployed miners left Rhyolite to seek work elsewhere, businesses failed, and by 1910, the census reported only 675 residents.[40] All three banks in the town closed by March 1910. The newspapers, including the Rhyolite Herald, the last to go, all shut down by June 1912. The post office closed in November 1913; the last train left Rhyolite Station in July 1914, and the Nevada-California Power Company turned off the electricity and removed its lines in 1916.[41] Within a year the town was "all but abandoned",[41] and the 1920 census reported a population of only 14.[34] A 1922 motor tour by the Los Angeles Times found only one remaining resident, a 92-year-old man who died in 1924.[42]

Much of Rhyolite’s remaining infrastructure became a source of building materials for other towns and mining camps. Whole buildings were moved to Beatty. The Miners’ Union Hall in Rhyolite became the Old Town Hall in Beatty, and two-room cabins were moved and reassembled as multi-room homes. Parts of many buildings were used to build a Beatty school.[43]

Rhyolite, maintained by the Bureau of Land Management,[44] is "one of the most photographed ghost towns in the West".[45] Ruins include the railroad depot and other buildings, and the Bottle House, which the Famous Players Lasky Corporation, the parent of Paramount Pictures, restored in 1925 for the filming of a silent movie, The Air Mail.[46] The ruins of the Cook Bank Building were used in the 1964 film The Reward and again in 2004 for the filming of The Island.[47] Orion Pictures used Rhyolite for its 1987 science-fiction movie Cherry 2000 depicting the collapse of American society.[48] Other movies that used Rhyolite as a setting include Ride ‘em Cowboy (1931), Rough Riders Round-Up (1939), The Arrogant (1987), Delusion (1991), Ramona! (1992), Ultraviolet (1992), Six-String Samurai (1998), and Twice as Dead (2001).[46] Goldwell Open Air Museum, an outdoor sculpture park managed by a nonprofit corporation, is located at the southern entrance to the ghost town.[49] The Rhyolite-Bullfrog cemetery, with many wooden headboards, is also near the southern entrance.[50]

Tourism flourished in and near Death Valley in the 1920s, and souvenir sellers set up tables in Rhyolite to sell rocks and bottles on weekends.[51] In the 1930s, Revert Mercantile of Beatty acquired a Union Oil distributorship, built a gas station in Beatty, and supplied pumps in other locations, including Rhyolite. The Rhyolite service station consisted of an old caboose and a pump managed by a local owner.[52] In 1937, the train depot became a casino and bar called the Rhyolite Ghost Casino, which was later turned into a small museum and curio shop that remained open into the 1970s.[50

Mining in and near Rhyolite after 1920 consisted mainly of working old tailings[50] until a new mine opened in 1988 on the south side of Ladd Mountain. A company known as Bond Gold built an open-pit mine and mill at the site, about 1 mile (1.6 km) south of Rhyolite along State Route 374. LAC Minerals acquired the mine from Bond in 1989 and established an underground mine there in 1991 after a new body of ore called the North Extension was discovered. Barrick Gold acquired LAC Minerals in 1994 and continued to extract and process ore at what became known as the Barrick Bullfrog Mine until the end of 1998.[53] The mine used a chemical extraction process known as vat leaching[54] involving the use of a weak cyanide solution. The process, like heap leaching, makes it possible to process ore profitably that otherwise would not qualify as mill-grade. Over its entire life, the mine processed about 2,800,000 short tons (2,540,000 t) of ore and produced about 690,000 ounces (19,600 kg) of gold.[53] At 1998 prices, the gold was worth about 0 million.[55]

AT&T: MA BELL WANTS HER MONOPOLY BACK
Global Revolution 1: American Revolution 2: Day 46: Communication 1
IronBoltBruce’s Kleptocracy Chronicles for 1 Nov 2011 (g1a2d0046c1)
How many examples of greed and corruption must you see before you act?

"We don’t care. We don’t have to. We’re the phone company." – Lili Tomlin

Ma Bell wants her monopoly back, and she’s almost got it:

"After being broken up in the mid-1980s in a landmark antitrust case, this
telecommunications icon re-formed in 2005, and became the nation’s largest
phone company when SBC Communications bought AT&T Corp. for billion. As
SBC, the company led the fight to allow the Baby Bells to enter the
long-distance market, where they hope to offer profitable broadband Internet
services. Cingular, which bought AT&T Wireless for billion in 2004 and
was part of SBC, is now in AT&T’s fold. Cingular – ultimately renamed AT&T
again – is the leading U.S. wireless carrier, with more than 54 million
subscribers. And AT&T’s growth continues. In 2006, AT&T agreed to buy
southern Baby Bell BellSouth in a deal valued at more than billion. In
2011, AT&T sought to merge with T-Mobile USA…"

tinyurl.com/24np77u

"This billion mega merger would create the country’s largest wireless
company, which along with Verizon – the other 800-pound gorilla in wireless
- would control nearly 80 percent of the U.S. marketplace. That means less
competition in an already much-less-than-competitive market, fewer choices,
and, most likely, higher prices. Parul P. Desai, policy counsel for
Consumers Union, said, ‘AT&T is already a giant in the wireless marketplace,
where customers routinely complain about hidden charges and other
anti-consumer practices. From a consumer’s perspective, it’s difficult to
come up with any justification or benefits from letting AT&T swallow up one
of its few major competitors. We plan to work very closely with regulators
and lawmakers to carefully scrutinize this deal and what it would mean to
people’s pocketbooks.’"

hearusnow.org

Many other consumer advocates oppose the merger, but they face an uphill
battle because of all of the politicians whose pockets AT&T is happy to
line. The Texas-based telecom giant has invested over 2 million in
lobbying since 1997, plus more than million in state and federal
campaign contributions since 1989, with their friendly pay-to-play Governor
Rick Perry taking the top recipient spot by pocketing 2,194 plus the
profit on 700 copies of his "Fed Up" book that AT&T bought…

tinyurl.com/3qzx7ef

…all told, almost three times as much as the 6,843 they gave to Barack
Obama over the same period:

tinyurl.com/3jlw3f4

And of course there’s plenty more where that came from, as Josh Levy of the
Save The Internet coalition laments:

"Maybe it’s the water in Washington that’s making people silly. Or maybe
it’s AT&T’s hefty campaign spending. Either way, something’s got people
believing AT&T when it says that up is down, green is red, 1 + 1 = 3 … and
that its proposed takeover of T-Mobile would be good for America. Look no
further than the 15 shameless representatives who just signed a letter
urging President Obama – whose Justice Department is suing AT&T to block the
deal – to support a settlement that would enable the merger and give AT&T
control over T-Mobile… We’ve debunked every AT&T myth about this
disastrous merger. The Justice Department boldly declared that the deal
breaks antitrust law. And AT&T’s own leaked documents prove that its only
goal is to snuff out a competitor."

"As Free Press Action Fund Research Director S. Derek Turner put it, ‘Surely
these members can’t believe that a letter repeating long-debunked talking
points would cause the Department of Justice to reverse course and ignore
the evidence behind its lawsuit.’ Either these members of Congress actually
believe in the fantasies AT&T cooks up, or they are so worried that AT&T
will turn off its spigot of campaign contributions that they’ll sign
anything the telecom puts in front of them. Speaking of which, it turns out
that these signers have collectively received more than 0,000 in campaign
cash from AT&T:

IT IS NO COINCIDENCE THAT OF THE LAST 14 U.S. PRESIDENTS, 7 HAVE BEEN
DEMOCRATS AND 7 HAVE BEEN REPUBLICANS.

Our Kleptocracy-controlled media focuses on America’s two-year election
cycles as if who wins or loses in the swinging of the pendulum was a matter
of life or death, when in fact even at the Presidential level it makes no
more difference than the outcomes of Monday Night Football, American Idol,
Dancing With The Stars, Hillbilly Handfishing or the trial of Michael
Jackson’s doctor. U.S. elections are staged primarily to give Sheeple the
illusion of control so they will (a) vent their frustrations and expend
their energy, emotions and resources supporting or attacking the Puppet on
the Left hand or the Puppet on the Right, and consequently (b) never
recognize and challenge the common omnipotent Puppetmaster.

There was no real change in 2008. There was no real change in 2010. There
WILL be real change in 2012, but it won’t be coming from tele-brainwashed
couch potatoes, manipulated voter lists, rigged voting machines or
predetermined ballot counts. It will be coming from us…

IronBoltBruce’s Kleptocracy Chronicles: 18 Oct 2011 (g1a2d0032c1)

Part 1 of 3: Ties to the American Legislative Exchange Council

"[Royal Dutch Shell PLC a.k.a. Shell Oil Company a.k.a.] Shell is a
corporate member of the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) as of
2011. G. Edward Pickle, Senior Government Affairs Counsel of Shell Oil
Company, is Shell’s representative to ALEC’s Civil Justice Task Force. It
was a ‘Chairman’ level sponsor of the 2011 American Legislative Exchange
Council Annual Conference, which in 2010, equated to ,000. Shell also
sponsored the Plenary Session speeches on August 4th, 2011, by ALEC
‘scholars’ Arthur B. Laffer and Stephen Moore… ALEC is not a lobby; it is
not a front group. It is much more powerful than that. Through ALEC,
behind closed doors, corporations hand state legislators the changes to the
law they desire that directly benefit their bottom line. Along with
legislators, corporations have membership in ALEC. Corporations sit on all
nine ALEC task forces and vote with legislators to approve ‘model’ bills.
They have their own corporate governing board which meets jointly with the
legislative board. (ALEC says that corporations do not vote on the board.)
They fund almost all of ALEC’s operations. Participating legislators,
overwhelmingly conservative Republicans, then bring those proposals home and
introduce them in statehouses across the land as their own brilliant ideas
and important public policy innovation – without disclosing that
corporations crafted and voted on the bills. ALEC boasts that it has over
1,000 of these bills introduced by legislative members every year, with one
in every five of them enacted into law. ALEC describes itself as a
‘unique,’ ‘unparalleled’ and ‘unmatched’ organization. It might be right.
It is as if a state legislature had been reconstituted, yet corporations had
pushed the people out the door. Learn more at ALECexposed.org "

Part 2 of 3: The Oil Spill the World Forgot

"As the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico continues to dominate headlines
around the world, public outrage is being focused more intensely upon BP and
its gaffe-prone CEO Tony Hayward. But amidst this crisis, the public should
not forget the atrocities committed by other massive oil companies. For
example, Royal Dutch Shell’s drilling operations have been spilling oil into
the Niger Delta in Nigeria since 1958. Because Nigeria is an impoverished
nation and oil revenues fund a majority of government operations, Shell and
other companies have been able to drill and pollute without serious
oversight for all these years. It is estimated that 13 million barrels of
oil have spilled into the delta, making life even more difficult for the
region’s destitute residents. Shell blames the constant spills on attacks
from "rebels," who are in fact minority ethnic groups who feel they have
been exploited and displaced by foreign oil companies. But Shell would never
consider pulling out of the region or finding ways to avoid ethnic strife.
Instead, Shell has proceeded with business as usual, and spilled a record
14,000 tons of crude oil into the delta last year [2009]."

Part 3 of 3: Shell’s Big Dirty Secret: Insight into the world’s most carbon
intensive oil company

"This new research paper rates the carbon intensity of the top international
oil companies, revealing that Shell is now the most carbon intensive oil
company in the world based on its total resources. This report documents
Shell’s record investment in dirty forms of energy, and it illuminates the
corporate strategy and lobbying for regulations that indicate it intends to
profit from that position for a long time to come. Our key conclusions are:

* Shell holds more carbon in its resources, per barrel of future oil
equivalent, than any other major international oil company. Shell is
therefore the world’s most carbon intensive oil company;

* The average carbon intensity of each barrel of oil and gas Shell produces
is set to rise dramatically, increasing 85 per cent on today’s figure;

* This sharp increase is caused by Shell’s move into oil sands, its reliance
on liquefied natural gas (LNG) and its continued gas flaring in Nigeria;

* Shell continues to expand investments in oil sands and oil shale, relying
on the dirtiest technologies to establish itself as a leader in the
industry;

* Shell has stopped its investments in renewables, except for biofuels,
which pose a whole new set of environmental problems;

* Internal documents obtained in the discovery process of Wiwa v. Shell
reveal that although Shell could have ended gas flaring in the early ’90′s,
it decided it was more profitable not to;

* Shell continues to flare gas in Nigeria at levels which, according to its
own figures, are only 12% less than those of 1999 after accounting for the
reductions due to community unrest;

* Because of all of the above, Shell is more vulnerable to carbon pricing
and subject to greater carbon risk than its peers.

* Therefore, Shell is leading industry lobby efforts in Washington,
Brussels, and the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change to
weaken and neuter legislation and regulation to tackle climate change."

THE IMPOTENCE OF ELECTIONS

Our Kleptocracy-controlled media focuses on America’s two-year election
cycles as if who wins or loses was a matter of life or death, when in fact
even at the Presidential level it makes no more difference than who wins on
Monday Night Football, American Idol, Dancing With The Stars, or Hillbilly
Handfishing. U.S. elections are staged primarily to give Sheeple the
illusion of control so they will (a) vent their frustrations and expend
their energy, emotions and resources supporting or attacking the Puppet on
the Left hand or the Puppet on the Right, and consequently (b) never
recognize and challenge the common omnipotent Puppetmaster.

There was no real change in 2008. There was no real change in 2010. There
WILL be real change in 2012, but it won’t be coming from tele-brainwashed
couch potatoes, manipulated voter lists, rigged voting machines or
predetermined ballot counts. It will be coming from us…

The 99 Percent

###

I AM NOT ANONYMOUS. I AM AN AMERICAN.

I am not just a Consumer. I am a Citizen.

I will no longer be labeled Left or Right, Liberal or Conservative,
Demopublican or Republocrat.

I will no longer follow Puppets labeled Left or Right, Liberal or
Conservative, Demopublican or Republocrat.

I am the People. And I am coming for the Puppetmasters.

I am part of the 99 Percent. And I demand the following:

1. End the Fed.
2. Reverse Citizens United.
3. Repeal PATRIOT Act.
4. Expose 9/11 Truth.
5. End Profit Wars.
6. Refund Taxpayer Trillions.
7. Imprison the Kleptocrats.
8. Single Term Limits.

Or, if these demands are not addressed promptly:

1. Regime Change.

"Those who make peaceful revolution impossible will make violent revolution
inevitable." – John F. Kennedy

No talking heads on Comcast/GE’s NBC/CNBC/MSNBC speak for us. No talking
heads on Murdoch’s Faux News speak for us. No talking heads at the
Kleptocracy’s Compliant News Network (CNN) speak for us (no matter how dull,
deliberate or subtle their delivery). No talking heads in the lamestream
media speak for us, period. And neither do ANY of the 537
bought-and-paid-for Kleptocracy puppets in Washington DC who will soon be
joining our legions of unemployed!

###

LABELS (A POEM OF PROTEST)

"Democrat", "Republican",
The parties of the system;
Puppets both, for sale their votes,
No character or wisdom.

"Liberal", "Conservative",
For change or status quo?
Pick either one, the change is none,
All charlatans and whores.

Far "Left" we place the Anarchists,
Libertarians claim far "Right";
Yet both decry the government:
False continuum brought to light.

For oil, "We" bomb their mud huts,
Strip them bare, then offer "Aid";
And fake their retribution as
Pretext – a false flag raised.

Unarmed hundred thousands killed
By weapons of "Defense",
While rights are lost for "Freedom" sake -
On profit, all depends.

With stroke of pen, the "Patriot" Act,
And patriots’ gifts are taken;
Then "Citizens United" leaves
Our citizens forsaken.

We protest loss of liberties,
Put "World Wide Web" to use;
Cloudmark Authority censors us
For "messaging abuse".

They label us to finger-point,
With labels, "They" deride us;
Their labels keep us all at bay,
For with labels, "They" divide us.

The Bright Field
by R. S. Thomas

"I have seen the sun break through
to illuminate a small field
for a while, and gone my way
and forgotten it. But that was the pearl
of great price, the one field that had
treasure in it. I realize now
that I must give all that I have
to possess it. Life is not hurrying

on to a receeding future, nor hankering after
an imagined past. It is the turning

of the lit bush, to a brightness
that seemed as transitory as your youth
once, but is the eternity that awaits you."

The Most Serious Crisis in the History of Iceland: Chinese Invasion
cod oil prices

English text
Japanese text
exsamples, Prato Italy
Rockford, Illinois

Japanese Version

As a person who is strongly attracted to Iceland and a citizen who live in a country China neighbour,
must advise you LOUD, NEVER LET CHINESE IN.
Mr. Ólafur Ragnar Grímsson should be fired from the status of President ASAP because he is going to joeopardise the citizens and the nation.
Do they believe that Mr. Huang REALLY buy 300k㎡ of tract for just an eco-tourism resort (this sounds incompatible for me enough) and golf course project?
That’s deadly naïve.

*the things will likely happen in the future if Iceland let in anything Chinese*

LEVEL 1 (= all over the world):
Chinese goverment will buy the tract from Mr. Huang.
→ A few of legal Chinese workers will come (all of thier relatives will move in a few years later).
→ Snakehead will smuggle over ten times illegal workers.
→ and mafia too.
→ Chinese employee work hard at first.
Then found companies years later, and conquer the low price war in the Icelandic market by illegal workers and illegal factory.
then will kick out the Icelandic ex-bosses out of the market.
→ The local industry will be destroyed and the campanies lost out will sell out their traditional technique & skills, patents intellectual property rights etc. and Chinese state-owned companies will take over them.
→ Finally uprooted the all know-how to China mainland.
→ and money too (undeclared income, of corse).
→ the de-industrialization of Iceland
→ at the same time,
because Chinese are lack of respect for other countries & cultures and Chinalise places wherever they live,
(They have no habit of "When in Rome do as the Romans do" )
they will build China Towns which are totally mismatched to beautiful Icelandic landscape and ignore the local compliance & moral with uncivililised manners (i.e. scattering rubbish, spitting out phlegm on the street, trying to offer bribes to officers to escape purnishment when they kill somebody by running over etc).
→ will come into collision with Icelandic natives.

LEVEL 2 (= Europian & American smaller cities and Japan)
Mafia will bring drugs, prostitution, money laundering and buying and selling of human beings.
→ will violate peace in Iceland.
→ Chinese invistors will aim at geothermal generation & water resources, (China is too lack of water) and seek to buy more tract and property all over in Iceland. (if things won’t work out, mafia will help them)
→ and also, aim at Icelandic fishery,
and try to poach and control fishing rights. (if things won’t work out, ditto)

LEVEL 3 (= large cities in Europa, US, Canada & Australia)
Chinese developements will be completely destroy the breathtaking scenary and mysterous atmosphere. That will make visitors cry who loved good old Iceland. However only Chinese visitors will increase.
→ Chinese population(& illigals) will powerfuly increase and start to march demonstrations for the right to vote calling the natives rasists, then they will attack the main street in Reykjavík, destroy the shops & buldings.
→ They will got suffrage by power of number and vote people who will do what they want.
They will change the every rules and laws which are against Chinese benefit under the name of democracy. (if things won’t work out, ditto)
→ send Chinese troops and establish military bases in Iceland against NATO.

From this stage, the environmental pollution will go worse.

LEVEL 4 (= countries around South China Sea , Taiwan & Japan)
→ Industrial wastes will pollute the North Atlantic Ocean, the Nordic Council will warn about it.
→ They will harass Norway about the North Sea oil and EEZ.
→ harass Greenland & Faroe Islands (Denmark) about the EEZ.
→ harass Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Russia, Canada & U.S. about EEZ in the Arctic Ocean.
→ The Nordic Council will deprive of Iceland’s membership.

LEVEL 5 (Tibet, Xinjiang and rural China today )
→ Althing will be disestablished and the puppet government by China start.
→ controled geothermal powers and fishery industry by mafia
→ vulgar houses, buildings and factories everywhere, ruin tourism.
→ Dioxin, cadmium and caesium detected from cods, ruin fishery.
→ built nuclear power plants and & arms nuclear weapon factories. They will become major sources of income to the government.
→ Final landfill sites of radioactive waste will be established, following mimicking Onkalo under Olkiluoto Island in Finland.
→ water of rivers will turn to be too colourful
→ bubble falls
→ Fjords will turn to be rainbow-colour melting
→ will never see aurora again
→ The Blue Lagoon will dry up, geysers will never explode again
→ Puffins become extinct (all eaten)
→ most of native Icelandics escape to the Nordic countries or U.S.
→ Internet is restricted, search sites like Google, Baidu, SNS sites like twitter, facebook, frickr etc are shut down to try to hide the fact that the redistances are arrested and tortured and locked for good.
→ Björk and her company will tour "Free Iceland" live around the world. However, they will be refused to land in Iceland & China for "personae non gratae".
→ "Exile Saga" by an Icelandic author in U.S. hit the world-wide best‐seller list…

LEVEL 6 (the last of Iceland):
Melted glaciers by warming causes frequent floods.
The eruption(s) of Mt.Katla or Hekla or Eldfell or Grímsvötn or Lakagígar or Kverkfjöll or Snæfellsjökull or Eyjafjallajökull or some of them will cause majour earthquakes and the explosions of the nuclear plants.
All citizens will be displaced from Iceland (Chinese first), because of the radioactive contamination which are worse than Three Mile Island and Fukushima and Chernobyl.

Iceland will be a "desert" island again after interval of 12 centuries.

immediate profit or eternal lost.
